The Institute draws on the expertise of two participating medical research units: the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and the University of Ottawa Eye Institute. It also draws on the expertise of a number of prominent researchers from other academic units in the two universities and medical professionals from hospitals and well established medical research institutions.
The Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Biomedical Engineering was established in 2006. This multi-disciplinary institute combines resources from seven participating academic units:
